Why inspect a moped?
Your moped must comply with the rules for driving on public roads. To determine whether your moped complies, you must inspect it later. If your moped is not inspected, you may still ride on public roads. We tell you everything you need to know about inspecting a moped.
When moped inspection?
There are a number of situations in which you should have your moped inspected:
- If your moped does not yet have a license plate
- If you are importing a moped from abroad
- If you had a collision with damage
- If the police find when checking on the road that your moped has technical defects
In the latter case, the RDW can register a "prohibition from riding on public roads" in the registration certificate. They also do this if the moped deviates from the data on the registration certificate. Only after you have had the moped inspected will the ban be lifted and you may ride on public roads again.
Where can I inspect a moped?
You can have your moped inspected at an RDW inspection station. To do this, you must make an inspection appointment in advance. You can do this online. Does it concern a damage inspection? Then you can drive your moped from your home to the inspection station on public roads on the day of the inspection appointment. If you are having your moped inspected because it does not yet have a license plate, you can apply for a one-day license plate. This allows you to ride your moped to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
What does the inspection of a moped cost?
The RDW charges the following fees for the inspection:

What does the inspection look for?
During the inspection, the moped is checked for compliance with the rules for driving on public roads. These include requirements for road safety and environmental aspects. The technical condition of the moped is also checked. In this way, the RDW ensures that all motor vehicles on the road meet the safety requirements.
Moped inspection without papers: is it possible?
The inspection will determine the year of construction or the date the moped was first put into service. If this is not possible on the basis of the moped, you must be able to prove the year of construction with additional documents. This could be, for example, an invoice for the moped or a warranty certificate. In principle, you can also have your moped inspected without papers, as long as it meets all legal requirements. However, the inspection is faster with papers.
