What does a yellow license plate mean on a moped?
Everyone is familiar with the yellow license plate for cars. But mopeds sometimes also have a yellow license plate. However, there are two types of license plates for mopeds: yellow and blue. We explain how fast you can drive with a yellow license plate and what the difference is from a blue license plate.
How fast may be driven with a yellow license plate?
On a moped with a yellow license plate, you are allowed to drive 45 kilometers per hour. A yellow license plate usually has a black border and black letters. When riding a moped with a yellow license plate, you must always wear a helmet. In addition, with a yellow license plate, you usually ride within built-up areas on the carriageway between cars instead of on the bike path. You are also required to have moped insurance with at least third-party coverage.
Difference between blue and yellow license plate
There are also mopeds with blue license plates. The main difference between the two is the maximum speed: a moped with a blue license plate has a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. In addition, as a driver of a moped with blue license plate, you are not required to ride a helmet. Also, you usually ride on the bike path instead of the roadway. What is the same, however, is that you must have at least an AM license and you are required to have moped insurance.
Yellow license plate application
You can apply for a yellow license plate through the RDW. To obtain a yellow license plate, you must first have your moped inspected. During this inspection, they will check whether the moped complies with the rules for driving on public roads. The technical condition of the moped is also checked. So make an inspection appointment first. Then you can apply for a one-day registration plate. With a one-day license plate you can drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.
Within 5 working days after the inspection, you will receive the registration card by mail. One working day later you will receive a letter with the registration code. Once the license plate is in your name, you must fulfill the obligations of a licensee. You must take out moped insurance and make sure your moped has a yellow license plate. You must purchase this license plate yourself from a license plate manufacturer approved by the RDW. Please note that prices may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer as they are allowed to set their own prices.
