In that case, you should apply for a new licence plate as soon as possible and you will temporarily be prohibited from riding the moped. Even if you buy a moped without a licence plate, you must ensure that you apply for one.

Driving a moped without a licence plate is even prohibited. You are not allowed to drive on public roads with a vehicle without a licence plate. Nowadays, all mopeds have a standard registration number. If you buy an older moped from before 2007, there is a chance that the moped does not yet have a licence plate. In 2007, the registration requirement for mopeds was introduced. In that case, you have to apply for a licence plate yourself before you can ride the moped.

Application for registration
To avoid the risk of a fine, it is best to apply for a registration number immediately if your moped does not have one yet. You can do the application at the RDW. Your moped must first be inspected by the RDW. They look at the technical condition and check whether the moped meets the rules for driving on public roads. You can make an appointment at ' Make an appointment'.
To take your moped to the inspection appointment, you can apply for a one-day licence plate. This will allow you to drive to the inspection location on the day of the inspection. You can apply for a one-day registration plate here. After the inspection, RDW will send you a registration card by post within 5 working days. One working day later they send you a letter with the registration code. Once you have all the documents, all the vehicle requirements apply. You must ensure that you have a registration plate and that your vehicle is insured. You can buy a licence plate from a licence plate manufacturer recognised by the RDW.
