What does suspending a moped involve?

Suspending a moped involves suspending the vehicle's registration number. If the moped is suspended, you do not have to pay road tax and you do not have the MOT obligation. You also then do not have to meet the third-party insurance obligation. You can suspend your moped for 1,2 or 3 years. As soon as you request the suspension, it takes effect immediately. You cannot suspend your moped for a date in the future. When the suspension period expires, you must immediately resume compliance with vehicle obligations. You can also choose to extend the suspension.

Why suspend a moped?

If you do not use your moped for a while, it may pay off to suspend the license plate. This will save you money. There are several reasons to temporarily suspend a moped. Maybe you are a real fair-weather driver and prefer not to use your moped in autumn and winter. Or you are going abroad for a while, so you cannot use the moped. Or perhaps you are physically unable to use the moped at the moment, but would like to do so in the future. Whatever your reason, if you plan not to use the moped for a while, it makes sense to suspend the moped.

  • The registration certificate
  • The transfer certificate

You can bring the registration card and the registration code instead of the registration certificate and transfer slip. If you suspend the moped online, you can log in with your DigiD and select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to suspend.

Getting someone else to handle the suspension

If you cannot apply for the suspension yourself, someone else can do it for you. If you have a registration card, the other person can arrange it online for you. The person arranging the suspension for you must be at least 16 years old (for suspending another vehicle, the minimum age is 18). With a paper license plate, you can only arrange this at a counter. 3. To suspend the moped, he or she will need your registration card document number and registration code
  4. He or she selects whether the vehicle should be suspended for 1,2 or 3 years.
  5. He or she must then pay the fee via iDeal.
  6. RDW then sends a confirmation of application to the email address provided.
  7. The license plate is suspended as soon as you receive a second mail from the RDW.

Risks of riding suspended moped

With a suspended moped you are no longer allowed to ride or stand on public roads. If you still take your moped on the road, you risk a hefty fine from the RDW.

Extend suspension

Once the suspension period has ended, you can terminate or extend the suspension. You can extend your suspension starting no more than 6 weeks before the end date of the suspension. The expiration date then simply remains the same as the end date of the old suspension. If you extend the suspension before 6 weeks, you will not keep the old expiration date. The date you extend the suspension will then be the new expiration date after 1, 2 or 3 years. 1 month before the suspension expires, you will receive a reminder letter from the RDW.

The registration certificate of the moped remains valid. If you end the suspension you will not receive a new registration certificate.
