How does transferring a moped work?
If you have purchased a moped, you must have the license plate transferred to your name. We call this transfer. Transferring a moped is very easy, but there are some things you need to pay attention to. For example, don't forget to take out moped insurance once the license plate is in your name. To make transferring a moped as easy as possible, we have prepared a step-by-step plan for you.
Where can I transfer a moped?
You can have a moped transferred at various places, such as a license plate counter, a PostNL location, an RDW inspection station or an RDW desk. The license plate is then transferred to the new owner's name. You can also choose to have the moped transferred online. This can be done with the DigiD app. Here you can read more about transferring a moped online.
When you transfer the moped, you will receive a certificate of indemnification. This indemnification certificate is for the seller. With a release certificate, the seller can prove that the license plate of the sold moped is no longer in his or her name. The seller is then also no longer liable for the obligations of a license plate holder.
What do I need to transfer a moped?
If you want to transfer a moped to your name, you must be at least 16 years old. You must also live in the Netherlands and be registered with a municipality. To transfer a moped, you need either the original registration certificate and transfer slip or the chain certificate in credit card format (also known as the license plate card). If you are going to transfer a moped, don't forget to bring valid identification. A valid proof of identity is a Dutch passport, driver's license or identity card.
What are the costs?
In 2024, the cost of registering the registry is €12.50. You pay the cost on the spot when you transfer the moped.
Roadmap for transferring a moped
When transferring a moped, you can follow the following steps:
- Ask the seller of the moped for the necessary documents
- Bring these documents, along with a valid ID, to the location
- Pay the transfer fee of €12.50
- Then the clerk will transfer the vehicle to your name. You will then receive a registration report. This is written proof of the transaction.
- You will also receive the release certificate. You give the release certificate to the seller.
- From then on, you are liable for the obligations of a license plate holder. For example, you must take out moped insurance. You are required by law to have at least third-party insurance for your moped.
- From the RDW you will receive the new license plate card the same business day (if the license plate is transferred before 4 p.m.) or the next business day.
