Is a souped-up moped insured?

To get right to the point: no, a souped-up moped is not insured. A moped has a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour. If you are a bit handy, tuning up a moped is not too difficult, which is why it is done more and more often. However, many people do not realize that a souped-up moped is not insured on moped insurance. This means that if you suffer damage or get into an accident, the insurance company will not pay out. In that case, you will pay the costs yourself. There is also a good chance that you will be fined by the Justice Department.

Does the insurer pay nothing at all?

You are required by law to have at least third-party insurance for your moped. This insures you for damage you cause to another person. The insurer assumes the maximum speed that legally applies to the vehicle. For a moped this is 45 kilometers per hour. A souped-up moped can obviously go faster than the maximum speed and therefore has a greater chance of causing damage.

Does the insurer also not pay out for liability damages?

Do you cause damage to someone else with your souped-up moped? Then the insurer is legally obliged to compensate the victim for the damage. However, the insurer will then recover these costs from you. In the end, you will pay for the damage yourself. Moped insurance does not provide coverage if the moped has been souped up.

What can I do if the insurer does not pay out?

If the damage is limited to eye damage, the costs are manageable. But in some cases, a moped accident results in personal injury. In that case, the costs often run a lot higher. Personal injury damages, for example from a collision with a pedestrian, can run into the hundreds of thousands of euros. Then the fact that the moped insurance company does not pay out is a bigger problem. The victim may even never be able to work again and have to modify his or her home to disability. If the insurer does not pay out anything, you will end up paying these costs yourself.

It is better not to take unnecessary risks and therefore not to boost your moped. The risks are much greater than you think, no fast moped can beat that. An accident is just around the corner. A wrong steering motion or a wrongly taken turn can already cause you to have to pay for a claim for life.
