Can a parent insure a scooter for a child?

Has your son or daughter just turned 16 and can't wait to hit the road with their own scooter? Of course, safety comes first, so scooter insurance should also be well taken care of. Many parents wonder: can I insure a scooter for my child? We explain how you, as a parent, can insure a scooter for your child and what the risks are.

As a parent, why insure the scooter for child?

Young people pay a much higher premium for their scooter insurance. This is because young people are proportionally much more likely to cause claims. Added to this is the fact that young people often have no claim-free years built up. As a result, insurers have little guarantee that the policyholder handles the scooter carefully. Therefore, they pose a greater risk to insurers. With insurance, the higher the risk, the higher the premium.

In some cases, parents then choose to self-insure the scooter for their child. This is possible if the license plate is in the name of one of the parents. In theory this sounds good, but in practice it doesn't quite work that way. This is because an insurer always asks about the regular driver. If this is a young person, the insurer will still charge a higher premium.

What are the risks?

Sometimes parents try to get around a higher premium by taking out scooter insurance in their own name and listing themselves as regular drivers, when in fact they are not. This is not recommended! Knowingly passing wrong information to the insurer can have major consequences. Does your son or daughter incur damage with the scooter? First of all, insurers already apply an additional deductible when it turns out that someone under 24 caused the damage. In addition, the insurer may withhold compensation if it turns out that you committed fraud when taking out the scooter insurance. This way, you will only end up being more expensive.

The best option is to simply take out the scooter insurance in your son or daughter's name (if the license plate is in their name) or to take out the scooter insurance yourself but list your son or daughter as a regular driver. That way, you may pay a higher premium, but your son or daughter will also build up his or her own claim-free years.

Can I even apply for scooter insurance for my child?

Yes, you certainly can. In fact, it is common for parents to purchase scooter insurance for their child when they are not yet 18. Once your son or daughter turns 18, they are authorized to purchase their own scooter insurance and adjust it as needed.
