Transferring claim-free years: what about moped insurance?

If you have purchased moped insurance, you may be familiar with the term claim-free years. As a policyholder, you build up claim-free years. Every year that you do not claim any damage with your moped insurer, you get 1 additional claim-free year. Damage-free years also give you a discount on your moped insurance. The more claim-free years you have, the lower the premium. Since January 1, 2022, the rules around taking over claim-free years have improved, to the benefit of the policyholder. In this article on Brommerverzekering.nl we explain in which situations you can take over claim-free years.

How exactly does transferring claim-free years work?

Previously, insurers were allowed to decide for themselves how to handle the transfer of claim-free years in some situations, such as in the event of the policyholder's death, divorce or after a lease. Since Jan. 1, 2022, however, this has been subject to a uniform policy that all insurers affiliated with the Insurers ' Association must adhere to. In the following situations, taking over claim-free years is now possible:

Death

One such situation is the death of the policyholder. If the policyholder was your partner, you can take over his or her claim-free years. Many partners share a vehicle together, such as a moped, for example. However, only the person in whose name the moped insurance is registered accrues claim-free years. Many insurers were already lenient on death before the new rules, but from now on every insurer is. So you can take over claim-free years from your deceased partner, provided you are registered at the same address. To use the moped, you must, of course, have a valid driver's license.

Divorce

A divorce often involves dividing assets. Claim-free years can also be divided between two ex-partners. The partner in whose name the moped insurance is registered is the only one who accrues claim-free years. This partner determines the division key, i.e. how the claim-free years are divided. By means of a waiver, (part of) the claim-free years are waived. In this way it is prevented that one of the two partners is left behind without any claim-free years and pays a lot more for his own moped insurance.

Leased driver

As a leaseholder, you are not the actual owner of the moped. The moped and the moped insurance are therefore not in your name, so you do not build up any claim-free years. With a lease statement, you can prove that you have driven damage-free during the lease period. Before Jan. 1, 2022, moped insurers were still going about this in varying ways. Some insurers only gave a premium discount, which you lose if you want to switch insurers.

Moped insurance abroad

Damage-free years that you have accumulated with a foreign moped insurance can be taken over with a written statement from the insurer in the country concerned. You can then submit this to your insurance company in the Netherlands. On the basis of this statement, the claim-free years will be awarded.

Transfer claim-free years from moped to car

Transferring claim-free years from moped insurance to car insurance is unfortunately less easy. According to insurers, the claim-free years you have accumulated with a moped are of little value for a car. This is because they believe that the driving experience you gain on a moped is irrelevant to a car insurance policy. Therefore, it is often not possible to transfer claim-free years from your moped insurance to a car insurance policy at the time you exchange your moped for a car.
